Summary: Opened it up to look for a blown fuse and could not find an obvious fix. Searched online and it seems like it's going to cost way more than it's worth. Now looking for another receiver, and I'M GOING TO STAY AWAY FROM PIONEER THIS TIME. I WISH I NEVER GAVE THEM A CHANCE.
Pros: When it worked, it provided good sound
Cons: Same problem as everyone else. UNIT JUST STOPPED POWERING ON. I took immaculate care of this unit and only lightly used this as the center of my home theater system. One of the HDMI input channels stopped working a few months in so I had to switch my inputs to another channel.. no biggie. Then on...
Summary: I would stay far away from any Pioneer receivers, seems quality and customer satisfaction has given way to the cheaper is better and toss it when it breaks mentality (planned obsolescence). what a shame too, had a pioneer head unit in my 96 Saturn back in the day and that thing was awesome.
Pros: while it worked I thought it was a nice receiver, especially for the price. Unfortunately that was somewhat short lived.
Cons: After a year and a half the receiver does not turn on, it's a known issue with the VSX series, not just the 821, and it seems to be carried over to the newer versions 822, etc. The issue in most all cases I've seen online is the Amp board. while the board level components can be had for under 20 ...
Summary: Bought this receiver from BestDeal Tech. They are not an authorized Pioneer dealer. The receiver did not work right out of the box. Pioneer would not help as the warranty is moot when the item is not purchased from an authorized dealer.
Summary: I decided to updgrade to an HDMI compatible reciever and replace a pioneer reciever that worked flawless for twenty years. I put the new pioneer 821 reciever in service and it worked great for 5 months then the video would not display only sound.
Cons: This unit stopped playing full volume. It spent 2 months at 2 different pioneer service centers after which i was told, "It's not broken. This is how it works. Do not leave the unit on, and don't turn it up all the way." That's the official Pioneer response. I was kind of dumbfounded.
Summary: Notice that Newegg doesn't even sell it now and Pioneer has the VSX-822-K on their website. Must have got one that was leftover somewhere, maybe even a return? I have had it for a few days over a month, didn't have any speakers when I bought it and hadn't had time to get it set up until now.
Pros: It will switch HDMI video
Cons: Can't get any audio out of it other than the speaker setup tones. Hooked up three sources to HDMI and analog. Even tried to get audio out of the headphone jack with no luck
Summary: Wish the dual pass-through audio issue would have been more clear prior to purchase. Wish the unit didn't come with the metal case BENT IN. What a rip off.
Pros: cheap; supposed to work as hdmi switcher If you are happy with the sound quality of just external speakers and are on a budget this might be a good choice.
Cons: unit came with a BIG DENT on the top of the unit yet the box had no damage at all. This means to me that the thing was damaged during mfr'ing or packaging or someone somehow took it out, stepped on it, and then put it back in the box! WTHECK! Not worth spending $$$ on shipping it back. TERRIBLE Q...
