Dont buy

chad johnson, Amazon
8 March 2014
  • Summary: Receiver was 2 yrs old and it shut off in the middle of a movie and it smelled like something was burning. The unit will not turn on now. I would not recommend buying. I will be buying a Yamaha, I am still using one that I bought 15 years ago.

After almost 2 years device will no longer power on.

TRiXWoN, Amazon
16 December 2013
  • Summary: Had this receiver for almost 2 years. Came out this morning and tried to turn it on and power button does nothing. Did some research on the internet and it seems to be a common problem. I would avoid buying this and get something slightly more reliable. I won't be paying $80+ to fix this.

Sorry, I Can't Recommend This Receiver

Amazon Customer, Amazon
23 July 2013
  • Summary: I got my Pioneer VSX-521 amp new on sale. Now I know why it was on sale. The features and quality of sound are actually quite good, and I did find the receiver's various surround sound modes very effective, and there are plenty of inputs (even if they require some juggling and effort to make them...

I must have a defective unit

Keverick Simmons, Amazon
3 October 2012
  • Summary: I received this receiver a few months back. It was all great at first but I started to notice the unit malfunctioning when I use multiple HDMI devices. For example if I switched to play my blu-ray player to another device the device goes to blue screen.

HDCP sucks

Anthony V., Newegg
18 June 2012
  • Pros: sound is fine and it does amplify
  • Cons: tested on 2 completely different setups and all cause my otherwise fine primary display to flash when using HDMI cables connected thru this receiver. not happy with mfr. response of "it is a HDCP compliant issue not us..."

Don't get if you are going to use HDMI

steven g., Newegg
17 February 2012
  • Summary: Honestly - this thing probably works good if you need something to play music on.. but I bought this for a spare room, and I'm not going to run HDMI, composite video, and leave an instruction sheet (if you want to watch tv don't select "TV" select "Video") If the HDMI switching worked it would be...
  • Pros: looks nice
  • Cons: You can only choose 4 pre-selected inputs if you want to use HDMI - the names given to these are confusing ( "Video" "BD" "DVR/BDR" "Adapter"is assigned to HDMI ) now logical names (dvd, tv, cd, cd-r,tuner,portable) are assigned to analog or component inputs. You can not assign the names The real...

no "HDMI Standby Through"

james s., Newegg
13 February 2012
  • Summary: I ended up returning this unit, because I really wanted hdmi standby passthrough. I picked up an onkyo tx-509, which really does do hdmi standby passthrough, can display it's menus over hdmi, and can play network sources to boot.. better deal IMO, for only $50 more.
  • Pros: cheap
  • Cons: even though the description states that this unit supports "hdmi standby through" it does not. it supports hdmi passthrough, but when it goes into standby (off) nothing comes out the hdmi port menus cannot be displayed on hdmi output

Wish I had not bought this!

Luan C. Do, Amazon
8 February 2012
  • Summary: Once in a while, you'd have to reset this device because it would freeze without any audio output. Hence, you'd need to have the manual ready because the sequence for resetting includes pushing several buttons simulultaneously and in proper sequence.

User Review

Animesh R., Newegg
23 January 2012
  • Summary: I have a LCD TV mounted on wall using slim fit wall mount. So, not enough space on the back of the TV for RCA connections. Side panel on TV has HDMI ports but no RCA. This receiver needs a RCA connection to access the setup menu. So cant use it with just HDMI connection.
  • Pros: nice system for the price
  • Cons: mandatory use of component RCA for setup menu
