Summary: Overall this is a great receiver. It looks great and performs as well as it looks. The On screen guide is a little muddles and outdated, but the remote functions well. Overall sound quality is not much to be approved on and also depends on what you are running. I like that I don't have to enter the on screen guide to adjust levels, and the pink noise generator works well for SPL meter calibration.
Summary: I bought this stereo about 2 years ago. It sounds great. It has every feature under the sun. So why do I hate it? It is the biggest cluge under the sun. I am a software engineer by trade. The geekest of the geeks. Yet to understand this stupid product it impossible! I added out door speakers. It took me two hours to install the wires in the wall and hand the speakers outside.
Summary: what a great receiver, i have owned 20 receivers in the past and this one is tops in quality, sound, and everything else that is great. you hear things in music and movies that you could not hear in other brands. i am a part time installer of equipment and i know, it stands alone among others. pioneer does not have any issues with HDMI like other brands does.
Summary: i just recently replaced a denon receiver with this pioneer vsx-23txh, i am a former pioneer person anyway. after hooking up this unit and tweaking the unit, i realized what i had been missing in sound. i am never going back to any other brand of receiver except to another pioneer.i have owned almost 20 receivers in the past 11 years, trying other brands and finally i realized you cannot beat a pioneer receiver.
Summary: Powerful with crystal clear sound. The flexibility for additional amps is what sold me on this AVR. Great price too. My front speakers need a lot of power and this AVR does a respectable job. Will add an external amp soon, but so far it has been great. If you can get this for under 400.00 bucks it's a no brainer.
Summary: Great receiver, lots of power and more flexability than you'll ever use. I purchased it to be my "main " receiver for my 7.1 surround home theater. My only conplaint is that XM cannot be sent to zone #3. I think that all Pioneer products compare very favorably to the compition.
Summary: I did a lot of research between the Marantz SR7002, Onkyo 807, and the 23. Onkyo had the features, but from what I've read the Marantz and Elites usually have the dynamics. I was contemplating on buying the VSX-33 when it came out, but was able to find the last Elite (display model) + 4-year retail warranty for under $750 at a major retailer in Arizona. To compare, I've had an Onkyo 607, HK, and a Sony receiver.
VSX-23 Powers down on High load demands during movies
13 July 2010
Summary: Nice unit, great features but the safety / sensitivity relays on the new power supply force the unit to shut down during high load demand while watching movies like Predator. Very disappointing considering the "Elite" tag. The Pioneer support web site has received many complaints, Their FAQ states problems with speakers, cross overs etc. but I believe it to be an issue with the receiver.
Summary: I noticed that the remote control does not turn on the A/V unit when sitting overnight or for a long period of time. When I contacted Pioneer, they said they knew about it and I need to bring it in to an authorized repair shop at my cost and inconvenience. They will not compensate for anything and customer service was rude. Another problem is the volume levels with different inputs. I use either optical or HDMI for audio and the volume level is difference for each one.
