Summary: I purchased a VSX-1021-K in September of 2011 (one year warranty). I really enjoyed using the product for about a year and a half until the unit suddenly started powering off with a flashing "FL OFF" light. According to the owner's manual, this is symptomatic of two possible causes.
Summary: First lets start with the sound, i'm not expert but it sound very good with my Mirage speaker. that is the only good aspect from this receiver so far that i can talk. But the day the warranty expired, the unit started to have problems. One or two time a week, no image from HDMI, have to reboot multiple time the receiver to get it back. It went like this for 2 month and then last week no sound... the unit is almost dead 1 years and 3 month after purchased.....
Summary: To start out, I purchased this receiver based upon the outstanding review Cnet.com gave this. The feature packed, good sounding unit all came crashing down less than 1 year after owning it. First the surround back left speaker started making static sounds. They were older speakers so I assumed it was the speaker. After a couple of months I decided to switch the left and right speaker wire on the back of the unit turns out the mystery sound followed the wire.
Summary: This receiver had great reviews and for everything except AirPlay, it works great. If you don't need or ever plan to use AirPlay, go ahead and get it. However, Airplay is what sold me on this. We have multiple macs and iOS devices at home, and to be able to start music from any of them and have it play on the stereo was what pushed me into buy this. The first few times it worked great, and was amazing.
Summary: Purchased the VSX-1021-K in November. Received it within no time. This device has many fantastic features like Airplay, Ipod connectivity, HDMI ARC, among others. The sound and video through HDMI worked great over a 50ft HDMI cable run. I was very pleased. However, when I connected an IPOD to the device, the device read and displayed the music playing on the ipod but no sound was heard.
Summary: Well I was initially very excited about getting this. I will say the sound is great, WHEN the connections are working properly. I'm fairly decent at setting up media, computers, and technology. That said, the directions for set up, and overall operation instructions are very poor, and the overall interface is not at all intuitive. Constant switching around to try out options of set ups, and experimenting. Wasted an entire day.
Summary: As noted in the other reviews, the speed of this receiver is just terrible. I'm "upgrading" from a Yamaha VX-2700, a really nice receiver on its own, and honestly, if I could switch back, I probably would (sold it). Changing sources takes way too long, if a channel is in SD, the receiver takes longer than my projector to accept the new signal. The iPad app is alright, when it works, and Airplay is great, when it works.
Summary: 90 Page manual !! "Hey Pioneer", I have other things to do ! A 5 step process just to kill the lame demo they programmed into it. They partnered with Apple and didn't learn a thing about simplicity and intuitive functionality. "Hurry up Apple", put out a TV - and include surround sound with it - so I don't have to take a engineering class to be able to watch a movie on yhis thing.
Summary: I purchased this receiver on August 25th, 2011 and have owned it for little over two months. Great receiver, great sound, great connections and performance. However... the MCACC light out the blue started blinking steadily without the receiver powering on. I looked through the manual and it says "The receiver has serious problems and will need a independent Pioneer dealer to review." I've only used this received twice before watching movies in my theater room.
Summary: I really wanted to like the VSX-1021 but I decided tonight to return it. I am neither an audiophile or videophile and I do not believe my expectations were unreasonable, but this unit has failed to meet them. Previously we were running our TiVo, Blu-ray player, and my son's Wii directly to inputs on our TV. We just used the TV speakers for sound. We wanted a better audio experience for the occaisional family movie night, and for playing music from iTunes.
