VSX-1020 - I'd do it again

  • Summary: Purchased this to replace a similar Pioneer of lesser features in the $300 range. Very happy with this guy. Use with PS3, Sony 46in LCD HDTV, Sony DVD multi player, ethernet directly to unit, sirius radio, 2 zones, iPhone constantly playing, charter cable. Just need one more HDMI input and it would be perfect. Great value for the features.
  • Pros: packed with features, multi-zone, iPhone/pod support (cable incl)
  • Cons: one slight issue with the headphone jack thinking headphones are plugged in :-)

Great sound, easy installation.

  • Summary: The reciver brought my TV viewing to life. I did not realize all the sounds I was missing. Installation was pretty straight forward. Netwoking the receiver made adjusting all the settings easy, and the tablet app makes it fun to play with the sounds around the room. This was a good buy for the money.

This thing is the perfect over all receiver for the serious intermediate.

  • Summary: This is not your everyday receiver. It takes a bit of audiophile knowledge to get it to do what it is capable of doing. If you are not an diehard audiophile you may want to find something a bit more consumer friendly. If you do have the knowledge, you are going to love this machine! I am a musician and sound clarity is as important to me as timing. I got the pioneer speakers to go with this and the sound blows away some of the more expensive sets that I have heard.

Good, but is missing DLNA support!

  • Summary: This unit is very much like the newer (VSX-1021-k), but doesn't have the DLNA support and the better iPhone/iPad app. You can't stream music from your NAS/Computer.

Excellent bang for the buck.

  • Summary: First of all, kudos for Amazon and 5th Ave Electronics for FAST and safe shipping. Really like the iPhone integration features. New modes step up functionality from my previous receiver which cost me nearly 4 times as much (Marantz SR-8001). If the Marantz hadn't suffered an early death I wouldn't have bought this. There is no comparison between the sound of the Marantz 8000 series and a receiver of this level.

Almost a perfect receiver

  • Summary: Well normally, I don't post reviews, but I certainly base my purchase decisions off of fellow reviewers hear on Amazon, so it's time to pay it forward. This receiver purchase comes after needing a receiver that has HDMI inputs to compliment the new additions to my downstairs entertainment setup. After buying the Samsung 55" LED 240hz from Amazon, I decided it was time to upgrade the receiver.

Very good performance and versatility with a few shortcomings

  • Summary: I picked up a 1020 over the weekend. I have been building custom cabinetry and needed a slimmer (and cooler) receiver for our secondary viewing room and the 1020 seemed to fit the bill in large part based upon a pleasant experience with the 919/1019 and the elite 21. For reference, the 1020 is replacing an Onkyo 1007, which I really enjoyed, but was a bit big for the cabinet and largely unused with a baby's bedroom nearly adjacent to the area.

Excellent sounding receiver

John R. Wright, Amazon
13 December 2010
  • Summary: What most people don't realize is that published specs are almost inconsequential to perceived sound quality. They juice all kinds of numbers (wattage) and ignore others. It is generally recognized within the professional audio community (AES), for instance, that Total Harmonic Distortion, is a useless metric as humans are relatively deaf to such distortion unless it is very high, much higher than any mass-produced, consumer-grade amp (regardless of price) is likely to...

Warning: Comes with KURO LINK enabled!

Leading Edge Boomer, Amazon

  • Summary: While this problem is about the Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K, it may apply to other A/V receivers that use HDMI CEC (each vendor uses a different term). It allows the remote for one component to control other components too. This does seem not as good as having a fine programmable remote like the Harmony One from Logitech. Anyway, I purchased this A/V receiver (last year's model) recently, along with an LG BD590 Blu-Ray Player, to replace a mediocre integrated mini-system.

bang for the buck

  • Summary: this a great receiver! I originally only considered Denons but for the price I bought the Pioneer, thinking it would be a good secondary unit if it didn't meet my high end needs. to my surprise this unit is working great, even better than expected. it takes some effort to configure simply b/c it has so many features. the most substantial features i would say is the 1080 upconversion of all input sources & the fully configurable audio set up options.
