Summary: *Note* This is an older generation product. Just reviewing now because I forgot... First Impressions: Like all high wattage AV receivers, its big and imposing. For those of small or petite frame, you'll want two people to handle this.
Summary: I upgraded from a yamaha/energy home theatre "bulk buy" deal, which was ok for $1,000, but after upgrading my speakers to B&Ws, a new home theatre amp was required. After looking around for at least 6 months, I settled on the Onkyo 805.
Summary: I bought this Onkyo receiver to replace an older Onkyo (the TX-DS787) receiver - mainly for the HDMI-connectivity and switching. I have to say - I am wowed by the ease, simplicity and efficiency of this receiver.
Summary: Heavy.... REALLY HEAVY didnt buy from the egg.. paid a bill more in dec 07
Pros: Great sound and looks. A lot of inputs. Reasonable price
Cons: Overheats... when using over the 74dBA volume setting, in a loud part of the movie the receiver shuts down. Looking inside you see a large basic aluminum heatsink. A quiet 120mm fan or two would have alleviated this issue. Opening the case though would probably void the warranty.
Summary: It's out of stock at the time of my review and it's possible that it will be discontinued soon, but it is a great product. I thought that my Yamaha was going out, but it turned out that it was a center speaker that had gone out on me. Looks like I need to buy a new one.
Pros: This unit is very nice. I had to turn down the knob on my sub woofer because this unit outputs so much on that channel. I replace an old Yamaha 5490 which was around $800 when I bought that 7-8 years ago. This Onkyo was on sale when I got it and it was a great investment. the sounds are much bett...
Cons: Heavy as hell, 50 pounds. Better make sure you have a really good entertainment center to hold it up. I wish it had more optical conections for input instead of coax, but since HDMI does video and sound, I don't think many will need the extra optical input anyways so long as they use HDMI.
Summary: This receiver has every modern decoding ability available on physical media. For the price I think it a fantastic bargain. I replaced my Denon AVR 5700 with this unit in order to gain the new HD DD and DTS as well as more capable video switching ----- and to my ears - cannot tell a difference in...
