Summary: Onkyo use to make quality products, but I've had 2 TX SR706's and both have needed service. The first one to break was covered under warranty, but there are so few service centers that most people will be forced to ship their product. The second unit just stopped working recently (powers up and then shuts off.) Forget customer service. It doesn't exist with Onkyo. The corporate office in NJ cannot be reach by phone and they don't reply to emails.
Summary: We have bought nothing but Onkyo receivers because we felt they were the best, a little pricey, but worth it. However about 3 weeks ago our HDMI board went out on the Onyko so we called their customer service, waited 1 hour and 12 mins on hold, and then when we got someone we were told that our warranty expired 12 days ago, so when I asked if they could work something out with us since we have been lifelong customers' of Onkyo the lady, whom I COULD BARELY UNDERSTAND,...
Summary: in and out of service center (over an hour away)...they couldn't replicate the problem so they couldn't fix it. turns out it's a known issue between the onkyo unit (and others) and my samsung tv making it unable to pass video signal via hdmi. the failure of the unit is one thing, but their inability to provide customer service to fix it means i'll never buy another onkyo product. such a shame.
Summary: This unit was well reviewed and seemed to offer good price performance. That was my assessment before I bought it. I would not buy this unit again. I liked the 4 HDMI inputs which is why I bought the unit. Problems developed. Strike 1: It turns out the upscaling is not recommended for THX. So what's the point of a THX unit if it doesn't work with a key feature. Strike 2: It also clicked heavily like there is some relay going off.
Summary: I purchased the 706 to replace an older Onkyo (TX-DS575X) which has performed flawlessly for 5 years. The replacement was necessary because all of my new AV components output through HDMIs and I want to feed their signals into one single receiver. The transition was fairly effortlessly, and I had the 706 up and running in no time.
Great Receiver. Onkyo customer service is really bad !

Summary: I've always loved my Onkyo receivers. I guess you never know how good a company is until you have a problem. When you call Onkyo, you really get the feeling they just don't care. They have crazy policies. You have to deal with your local repair shops. There is no exchange unless it's out of warranty. WHAT the heck? Also, warranties DO NOT transfer ... so be sure to read the fine print if not buying new from Amazon.
Summary: BEWARE...when blu-ray is passed thru the receiver via hdmi there are blue artifacts in the blacks. I confirmed with Onkyo that this is a known defect and they do not have a current fix. I returned my order to Amazon and will look for a different brand.
