DO NOT BUY ANY OF THIER PRODUCTS

4547dakota, Amazon
16 December 2011
  • Summary: We have bought nothing but Onkyo receivers because we felt they were the best, a little pricey, but worth it. However about 3 weeks ago our HDMI board went out on the Onyko so we called their customer service, waited 1 hour and 12 mins on hold, and then when we got someone we were told that our...

Amp protection circuit

Bruin, Amazon
11 November 2010
  • Summary: I purchased the 706 to replace an older Onkyo (TX-DS575X) which has performed flawlessly for 5 years. The replacement was necessary because all of my new AV components output through HDMIs and I want to feed their signals into one single receiver.

Highly unreliable

Cyberdog, Amazon
11 November 2010
  • Summary: This unit was well reviewed and seemed to offer good price performance. That was my assessment before I bought it. I would not buy this unit again. I liked the 4 HDMI inputs which is why I bought the unit. Problems developed. Strike 1: It turns out the upscaling is not recommended for THX.

Don't buy this receiver!!

Surf40, Amazon
11 November 2010
  • Summary: Soon after the warranty expired, the left and back right channels began to get staticky, and then eventually died. I tried several fixes, including re-setting it to factory specs. Nothing worked, and Onkyo offered a laughable price for a refurbished model. Go with another brand.

dan, Amazon
11 November 2010
  • Summary: in and out of service center (over an hour away)...they couldn't replicate the problem so they couldn't fix it. turns out it's a known issue between the onkyo unit (and others) and my samsung tv making it unable to pass video signal via hdmi.

Poor build quality

Jonathan B Ostroff, Amazon
11 November 2010
  • Summary: Onkyo use to make quality products, but I've had 2 TX SR706's and both have needed service. The first one to break was covered under warranty, but there are so few service centers that most people will be forced to ship their product.

Hmmm...i should have...but...but...

Anonymous, Newegg
18 August 2009
  • Summary: But, NE did honor the $30 less at original order time after calling, and another $25 on future purchases for the RMA hassle. Bottom line, you can get it for $500, or less if you watch , and wait, for it. Originally on the fence with this because of some of the bad experiences here.
  • Pros: None yet. First one DOA. NewEgg to replace.
  • Cons: First one DOA. Should have waited for it to go down in price. An hour before I first ordered it (as I was deciding) it went up $30 and now it's again being offered at the $30 less price. The day my RMA was recieved in CA at NewEgg (today), they were offering this $80 less with promo code but they...

FIOS subscribers beware

Mercedes Benz, Amazon
21 April 2009
  • Summary: Apparently this Onkyo receiver and perhaps others in the Onkyo line have problems with Verizon's FIOS service when using HDMI cables. I suspect that the problem lies with the Verizon set top box/DVR not the receiver but buyers should be aware of the issue.

Great Receiver. Onkyo customer service is really bad !

TomT, Amazon
11 March 2009
  • Summary: I've always loved my Onkyo receivers. I guess you never know how good a company is until you have a problem. When you call Onkyo, you really get the feeling they just don't care. They have crazy policies. You have to deal with your local repair shops.
