Summary: Sounded GREAATTT when it worked but it just didn't work for long. Maybe try a different company if I were you.
Pros: Sounds amazing, great HDMI pass-through video quality
Cons: It broke within a year. Not sure what's wrong, but it only stays on for 1 - 5 minutes before it turns off again. Only plays through 1 channel and at a very low volume. Trying to find a repair center to see if this is worth salvaging...really disappointed as a first time buyer of Onkyo
Summary: By the time we had it set up - it did sound good and the picture was good. It was certainly better than before - but I cannot say - great. My Yamaha WAY outperforms it acoustically. Video - I'd call it even. I'm going 3 egg.
Pros: Pro? we did get it set up and it did sound and look good.
Cons: Cons? It took several hours to get the cable tv, DVD and CD hooked up and displaying (where video goes out) - to a brand new plasma tv. Also, manual is not clear - numerous leaps of faith. And - the microphone automatic speaker setup kept erroring - we had to go in manual to be sure. I'm a bit sk...
Summary: Seems like less surround than my previous unit- yes, crisper but less like I am immersed in the scene. Tried all different tweaks with the sound/output. Used the Audessey auto setup too. Looks like all the Onkyos may have the same display qualities. Unit is cool to the touch when "off". No hum.
Pros: Strong crisp sound.
Cons: Display only shows minimal info via text or graphics. Text is smaller than my older JVC and only "dots" for type of signal, etc. Older JVC had an actual display of type of signal being recd and output so you could easily see if just stereo or actual 5.1.
Summary: I replaced an older Yamaha (non HDMI/HD) receiver with this one. The Onkyo was easy to set up although it took a while to figure out how to set all the options I needed. Sounds great. My biggest complaint is with the manual and Onkyo support.
Summary: I bought this receiver to replace my Sony 5.1 receiver, primarily because I wanted a dual room/dual source receiver but it needed to fit into a tight space, less than 6.25" high, so my selection was already limited. It's a good receiver, don't get me wrong, but I'm not super-impressed.
