  • Summary: This is the 4th receiver I've owned. First was an Onkyo I bought in 2008 but as time went on I was looking for more power and a crisp sound. I then went thru 2 Denons with no satisfaction but with this receiver.....this is the latest and greatest of the new line. Very satisfied

TX-NR838

  • Summary: Nice receiver. I have it set up in a 7.2+1 ( we all need 500 watts of subs!) and it sounds great. Tweeking the speaker settings made a big difference, especially in music mode- Guys at Crutchfield helped with that! This unit is set to take you into the next generation of A/V.
  • Pros: Sounds Great, relatively easy to adjust settings. Wireless and other features hooked up flawlessly (which is great, since I come form the generation before them!).
  • Cons: No automaticaly switched 120v outlett or 12v trip

GREAT

  • Summary: I love this receiver! Great sound, very musical, powerful. I wanted built-in WiFi AND HDCP 2.2 compliance for future 4K video compatibility. At the moment Onkyo is the only game in town that meets both those requirements and is also Atmos ready.
  • Pros: Built-in WiFi with external rabbit ear antennas for better reception/connectivity, HDCP 2.2 compliant, Atmos ready.
  • Cons: As others have mentioned, would be nice if the remote control were lighted. Make sure you check the dimensions to make sure it fits if you plan on installing this in some kind of entertainment cabinetry.

Onkyo TX-NR838

  • Summary: This unit replaced a 14 year old very high end and expensive Integra A/V receiver that finally gave up the ghost in very smoky way! Have been looking at going the Onkyo route instead of back to Integra.
  • Pros: Easy setup, plenty of power, pretty good remote control (if my wife can use it then it must be good!)
  • Cons: Remote control is not backlighted. Would of liked to see that the front USB port could handle photos as well as music.

  • Summary: I bought this because I needed an AVR that would do HDMI2 with HDCP 2.2. I have a Sony 4K set with the 4K media player X10 with needs both of those features to play properly. I was a bit surprised that it was able to play HDCP 2.2 material.
  • Pros: Plays HDCP 2.2 material
  • Cons: None yet

OK system,

  • Excerpt: This system is OK. It could benefit from a second component video input instead of the composite video. It has an over abundance of HDMI inputs. Some key inputs are unassignable. I love the overall design of Onkyo AV receivers, but sometimes the input mix is not optimal.
  • Pros: Io Matrix
  • Cons: Component inputs

Not Disappointed

  • Summary: I recently purchased the Onkyo TX NR 929. I had planned on keeping it until Onkyo announced they would upgrade the 2014 AV lineup with Dolby Atmos. I spoke with an Onkyo rep and was told that at this time Onkyo has no plans to upgrade the firmware on the 2013 lineup to accept Dolby Atmos.

  • Excerpt: I was looking at the integra and chose this instead. Same received from what I can tell and for $ less. Setup was easy and sounds great. Once again, great service from B&H. They keep me coming back.
