Summary: Well after the initial positive review I started having problems with the receiver. I had friends over and we were going to watch a movie. When I started the movie we got a great picture but no sound. I never could resolve the problem so no movie that night. The next day I tried again but no joy. I had a great picture but no sound. So I thought that let it play and see what happened since I had no clue as to what was happening.
Summary: After purchasing multiple Onkyo receivers from $450 to $750 over the past two plus years for multiple locations, a pattern has become clear. The audio components are not reliable. We have had audio problems with three out of five Onkyo receivers. They do indeed sound great when new, but then something happens. With the two more expensive units there was a loud POP! and then silence. No sound. One of these units was out of warranty, and one was in.
Summary: This is the second Onkyo receiver I have ordered from Amazon. The first one was the smaller 626 which was sold as new but is not new. It arrived with the settings configured by a previous user. I was able to clear it and get into set up, but the firmware update failed. After power cycling and clearing repeatedly the 626 finally took the firmware update and started working properly. If I could the 828 to do this much I would be using it and not writing this review.
Summary: Ok this is the second Onkyo I purchased this year. I guess I am a glutton for punishment. The first was the 717. It was extremely difficult to set up, and required special instructions from support that was simply not present in the manual anywhere. It functioned for about a year and then the zone 2 amp section blew. Yes, I checked the speaker impedence, etc and I did not overdrive the unit.
Summary: Thought I would save a few bucks and get the refurb and go figure I had a problem in the first two weeks. Check SP Wire issue - would turn off at higher volumes and final turned off and never came back on. Never had the issue with the unit I replaced it with so I knew it was the Onkyo. Called Onkyo and they acted funny because I bought it at Amazon. Told me to email them the invoice, which I did, and I never heard back. I called Amazon and they were great.
Summary: I bought the 2011 version of this model and after 3 months out of warranty the HDMI card failed. They paid for the repair, after I paid for shipping to have it repaired it lasted 3 months. onkyo says I can trade it in for 1 of their refurbished models but they do not have a similar model to the original so now I'm out of luck. I have been buying onkyo since the early 1990's and I will never purchase a product from this company ever again. Yamaha here I come.
Summary: Onkyo was a brand i loved , purchased the 609 and after a year or so the hdmi board had problems, took it back to where I purchased it and decided to give the 828 a whirl and was very pleased with the amp . Five months later the amp has got the same issues as the 609, no sound. To be honest i'm pretty upset that they have not addressed this problem . I don't use it everyday and can honestly say it has had about 40 hours use if that.
Pros: Good if it worked
Cons: HDMI Board has serious problems throughout there range .. don't waste your money .
Summary: Purchased this refurb end unit as it was a great deal on a product I had been looking at for a while. Have never had a problem with a refurb product, but this unit was different. First unit was defective, but amazon returns are hassle free (always save your packaging). Replacement unit worked great on initial set up, but proved defective when I tried to watch a DVD 3 weeks later. Unit will not produce sound for DVD, cable, or VHS.
Make sure you have a local repair facility because you will need it. Look at 2011 808 model reviews Overpriced junk!

Summary: Don't waste your money. Go to local bb and purchase new Sony model 840 or 1040 with ext warranty. Onkyo will rip you off and ordering online means shipping hassles & costs. Onks are designed to break after warranty expires. Don't be a victim!
Summary: I have owned3 Onkyo receivers. Just picked the second one up from authorized repair center. It failed out of warranty and costs more to fix than a better quality Denon costs new!! Dont waste money on Onkyo, great marketing but poor build quality.
