818s and Heartbreak

Matt Murdoch "HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER", Amazon
3 August 2015
  • Summary: Worked perfectly for two years and suddenly the Hdmi board doesn't recognize audio signals from any source. Apparently this is a known issue, and instead of fixing it in current generations they simply discontinue the model and release a new and improved one with the same HDMI issues.

Bad Unit, warranty, and customer service!

reddsimpson, Amazon
26 March 2014
  • Summary: So my 818 no longer outputs audio on any input except when in stand by mode. The network port and usb ports are also not working. Also this unit is supposed to support 8ohms yet you are forced to select either 4 or 6...

Onkyo is having problems

Stephen D., Newegg
10 November 2013
  • Summary: Sending this back and going to buy a Denon.
  • Pros: Nice sound easy to setup
  • Cons: The TX-NR818 as to replace a TXNR-809 that the HDMI board went south. Of course finding a replacement HDMI board is akin to finding chicken teeth. Second receiver that the HDMI board has had problems. This receiver came to me with a non working network card. My guess is that Onkyo has little to n...

Dead On arrival

Louis H., Newegg
3 November 2013
  • Pros: Mine was dead right out of the box. The replacement sent me was the wrong ( lesser ) model.
  • Cons: Would like to hear one that actually works before rendering an opinion.

Great Sound, Crappy Manufacturer Support

Tong Po Jones, Amazon
29 July 2013
  • Summary: Sound quality is great. Mostly attribute to decent speakers and Audyssey, but I do think the amplifier section is good. In addition to the Gapless Audio issue, Onkyo will not take ownership of a firmware issue that ruined the pass through capability.

Read before you buy to make sure it's right for you

Wojciech W., Newegg
15 January 2013
  • Summary: All the review was based on the newest firmware version I found on Onkyo website at the time of writing this review. Buy this receiver only for it's audio amplifier section. Never consider any of the advertised video upscaling features as your decisive arguments to buy.
  • Pros: - plenty of power to drive your speakers loud (135W at 8 ohm with 0.08% THD. - very clean sound - being able to assign amplifiers for different configurations (bi-amp etc...) - 9 channels if you use external amp for additional channels - Different audio settings assignable to different inputs - s...
  • Cons: Hmm where to begin... First, anything and ALL VIDEO related features period! Unless you completely disable ANY and ALL video processing (upscaling, forced 24p, color) picture will video will become stuttering. At first I thought this was my Dish Network receiver fault (VIP722k), but after connect...

Too many problems to justfy price

Anthony R., Newegg
5 January 2013
  • Summary: What is sad is that all the issue I have with the 818 could be solved with better firmware/software. Onkyo needs to raise the talent level and skill set of their software engineers or they will surely start losing market share.
  • Pros: Great sound. Audyssey XT32 is just fantastic, my music has never sounded this good in my man cave.
  • Cons: While the sound is great I cannot recommend this receiver. It has several very annoying features that make it frustrating to use. First of all is the lack of gapless song playback from network devices. When Beethoven’s 5th is building momentum from the 3rd to 4th movements it is absolutely deflat...
