Summary: Almost 3 years to the day (I was luckier than a lot of others who were 2 months over their warranty when...) one night the receiver was working perfectly as it had since I got it 10/2010 the next morning NO AUDIO AT ALL !!!!! So I go through all the steps rechecking connections etc., etc. for 2 1/2 weeks !!! Finally I get on line with the ONKYO forum and find to my amazement and dismay that there were SEVERAL people with the EXACT same problem.
Summary: Like everybody else says, same problem.... It went quiet after just under 3 years, after warranty expiry. Can't believe how everybody is having the same issue after about the same amount of time. However, I just contacted Onkyo and they said they would fix it even if it's past warranty. Will update with better rating if it really gets fixed. Obviously this shouldn't happen in the first place but good customer service would be a positive.
Summary: Like so many other reviews of this home theater receiver, ours stopped working after 2+ years. The HDMI sound processing board supposedly fails, according to multiple audiophile discussion boards, and this is a typical failure of the Onkyo TX-NR808. In general, we were pleased with the sound and options prior to the sound failure, and with minimal use over the last two years, we expected the unit to continue working for many years in our home theater.
Summary: Count me among the many others with no sound a few months after the warranty expired. The receiver was excellent until then. I contacted Onkyo support, and they agreed to cover the repair! I was ready to swear off Onkyo forever, but now I'm a happy camper again.
Summary: It might sound like I'm joking, but this receiver blew sparks from the top and will no longer function six months after the warranty expired. While watching Netflix on our television, at the same volume and settings as the receiver has done for its entire life, it just erupted into sparks leaving us with a shelf sized brick. Not only that but we had to send it in for warranty work 2 months after purchase and the service was horrible.
Summary: Wow. What a bummer. When the sound stopped... for no apparent reason, I tried to connect and reconnect everything. When I did an internet search on TX-NR808 and "TX-NR808 No Sound" came up as a suggested default search -- I sorta knew that things didn't look good. And I'm just out of the 2 year warranty period. This seems to be a very common problem. Very disappointing.
Summary: I bought this for the name brand, for its HDMI inputs and for its access to internet radio stations. It seems like it would be a good receiver if it worked consistently. After about a year it started just clicking when I turned it on. The only way to stop it was to unplug it. After an amazingly unhelpful conversation with the "help" line where their sole advice was to take it to a repair shop, it did just that.
