Summary: I purchased this receiver in April 2012. It has been an excellent receiver until last night when suddenly the main HDMI out to the TV quite working. There was no picture but there was sound. Same with all the other input sources. I had read about the HDMI problems with this receiver so thought the HDMI was fried. I call Onkyo customer support after doing some checking into the problem online. They recommended unplugging the receiver. I did this for about 10 minutes.
Summary: I bought the Onkyo TX NR709 because of the many inputs, network connection and price. The processor does a fine job of producing good channel separation in the many modes to choose from. So far it is the best receiver, as far as the processor goes, I have even had. The internal channel amplifiers work OK. I hooked up mono block amplifiers to the right, center, and left preouts and the sound is way more clear. The universal remote is somewhat limited in the learning mod.
Pretty much as expected, but a little disappointed with Net features

Summary: I can rave all day long about the quality of Onkyo and the feature list of this receiver, but I'll leave that to the past reviewers. Let's just say I've always loved Onkyo and their features and quality are generally second to none. I'd really like to give this 4.5 stars with 1/2 star being lost to a mild disappointment. I was really hoping that Internet radio listening would be almost as seamless as regular radio station listening.
Summary: Most of the features of the Onkyo have been great, including the sound management. The only issue I've had is when I was trying to view frame sequential 3D (full 1080p 3D) from a Panasonic Blu-ray player to a new Epson 3010 projector. If I connected the player directly to the projector with my 30ft 1.4 hdmi cable, I could get the great 3D. As soon as I put the Onkyo in between, the best I could do is "side by side" which is lower than 1080p.
Very Good Receiver, good feature and priced right. HDMI problematic

Summary: I am upgrading from an 5 years old onkyo tx-sr605 to the tx-nr709. Here are my comments after 3 days of using it (connect with HDMI from cable box, blue ray dvd) 1. The tv picture seems to be better. Not much but it just seems so, perhaps the upscaling chip has something to do with it. 2. The set up is much easier than the old onkyo tx-sr605's. 3. I set up with Theater Dimensional because I have only 1 sub, and 2 front speakers. The sound comes out better. 4.
Summary: In terms of functionality and features nothing in the TX-NR709 price range even comes close. Onkyo packed so much into it, that I expected them to make compromises when it comes to sound and amplification quality. However, my non-audiophile ears cannot detect any such compromises. In fact, in direct comparison to my previous Denon and Yamaha receivers the Onkyo sounds better in stereo, and it sounds *much better* and more detailed when it comes to surround sound.
Summary: This is a short review - I'll leave the technical stuff to the audiophiles. I recently bought a 60 inch LG HDTV from Amazon. I quickly found out that my 3 year old Sony AV receiver would not pass a 3D signal via HDMI from the PS3 and Directv boxes to the television. I looked at a bunch of receivers on Amazon and decided to order this NR709 because: a. it had the features I wanted; b. the reviews were generally good; c. reasonable price; and d. FREE SHIPPING.
8 February 2012
Summary: Schönes, Gut Ausgestattetes Gerät mit kleinen Mängel!
Summary: Der Receiver ist wirklich ein Top Produkt!
