Summary: After a few months there was nos sound coming out of the CBL/SAT port. I switched to a different port, it worked for a while and then there was no sound out of that one either. As I am living overseas there is nothing that I can do except junk it and never buy Onkyo again.
Summary: Onkyo is total junk. This is my second one and both are broken. First one was an Onkyo HT-R667 and it broke right at one year mark just in time for it to be out of warranty. The hdmi ports stopped working and now it only works with RCA cables. I decided to move it to another room that has another TV that is not used too often but it will do the job. Here is where I failed, I bought another Onkyo.
Summary: Had this since Nov 2010 then remote started working intermittently a few months ago Then quit working altogether last weekend - for receiver only. Remote controls other devices just fine. Found numerous complaints on AVI user group - this is a chronic problem with a couple of Onkyo models. Onkyo website FAQs indicated free repair including shipping, even if out of warranty. Called Onkyo and after long hold time, got hung up on.
Summary: Oh yes, it has all the cool features and setup tools. It is easy to setup and use (1 star). And it worked great for about a year and then the problems started. The remote will lock up and just quit working. The receiver will lock up; none of the controls on the front panel will work. You have to unplug it to turn it off. Even stranger, if you plug it back in but leave it off, it will come on by itself!
Summary: Just a word to the wise...make sure you research the problems this line of Onkyo products has been having over the past year. I purchased this model in December of 2010. Worked great for the first few months then the remote control would randomly stop working for a day at a time then start working again. I could still operate the unit using the front panel controls. (The remote worked just fine controlling my Blue Ray and satellite boxes.
Stopped working the 2nd time I used it! They need to recall this receiver.

Summary: I bought this ONKYO NR708 without reading the reviews for it..big mistake...now I'm reading that it's happened to many others. The 2nd time I used it the receiver locked up and wouldn't let me change the input from cable to BluRay, the remote wouldn't work and neither did any of the buttons on the receiver. I tried everything and nothing worked. The only way to turn it off is to unplug it. It's now completely locked up and unusable.
Summary: I purchased this unit after reading many positive reviews about the X08 series of receivers from Onkyo. To cut a long story short, the NR-708 worked fantastically well for the first 7 months. Then, about two weeks back, the unit simply refused to power on. It stayed powered for about 3 seconds and then switched itself off. I tried removing all the speaker connections (on the off chance that a loose copper strand may be activating the protect mode). To no avail.
Summary: Let me add by voice to the chorus recommending that you AVOID this receiver at all costs. For several months, my receiver has sporadically ignored signals from the remote. Now, it randomly turns itself on! Fortunately, I live very close to an Onkyo warranty repair facility. The tech tells me that the problem is that a Chinese subcontractor who does the p.c.
