Summary: I use this as my surround sound system and as my music amp. I purchased this Onkyo as my all in one system, with a mind on high amps and later upgrades to the rest of my surround sound. Currently I am only set up with the 5.1 surround sound, using Bose 901's as my front speakers, Bose 601's as my rear speakers, a Bose center channel speaker, and a Yamaha sub woofer. Most surround sound DVD's are still in the 5.1 catagory.

Summary: This is the top rated AV Receiver from Onkyo, as reviewed by several specialty magazines. The unit was shipped as an open box unit from Amazon. Box and packing material were pretty beat up, but still OK. I connected everything, MUCH easier with HDMI cable, including; phono pre amp into tape circuit, BD DVD Player, and CATV input. Only one HDMI output to TV. Both audio and video are great! This replaced my old top of line, from 1996, Yamaha.
Summary: Purchased this system after having the 805 for four years. Thought it would be a great unit for a dedicated theater. After initial installation system sounded terrific, set up was easy,, have the following on the system, Toshiba H-35 HD-DVD player, Pioneer 504 Laser Disc player, Sony 960 carousel Blu-Ray player, and Oppo 93 Dvd player. Worked well for 3 months and then all of a sudden it froze and would not turn off.
Summary: receiver performance is great adds vastly more amounts of depth even to stereo sound plenty of power to spare have jbl studio l speakers hooked up towers sound great all in all a great product but i do have 1 issue while on pc mode if you use a pc based display as in 1360x768 the audio signal will cut out for a second and receiver basically refreshes signal from pc quite annoying but did switch it to a tv based display and works just fine color is a bit off but nothing...
Onkyo 5008 AVR; update- in for SECOND WARRANTY REPAIR
Mark "MT", Amazon
4 March 2011
Summary: Just installed my new TXNR5008 Onkyo AVR ([...]) in the home theater rack. $2600 retail and on sale for $1800.Prime next day shipping $3.99. Although the unit is heavy at 55 lbs. it is feature packed as the Home Theater Magazines and Audio Mags will tell you with a 5 star rating. It is an awesome upgrade from my Pioneer Elite VSX-74 which has served me well but only had 2 HDMI inputs and older Dolby technology.
Summary: The new flagship unit is more refined and user friendly with many of the rough edges ironed out. The osd is a big improvement you can make adjustments on the fly with (on screen display) for audio and video. The older version 5007 for me was freezing up not letting speaker output and you were forced to do resets which involved unplugging unit and thus loose all your previous settings. Not good.
