Summary: This receiver is discontinued so I'm just noting my experience. The unit worked pretty well and had lots of features, my biggest dig is that it would not forward digital sources to the Zone outputs (many AVRs have this problem, check out Emotiva processors if you need this feature). If it kept working I might have rated it higher, but after a couple years the HDMI board went out.
Summary: My 5008 lasted 20 months before having the same problems as everyone else. I had to send it in for repair. That was 3 months, 2 weeks ago. I still have an old Yamaha sitting where this 60 pound beast sat. The sound doesn't even come close to the Onkyo. If it were not for the problems I am having, I would give it 6 stars. I won't go as far as saying don't buy one, because if you get one that works, you will love it.
Summary: I ordered the Onkyo tx nr5008 for my new dream home theater. Within 3 months the receiver began cycling through all of the listening modes with no sound at all. I called customer support and after jumping through all the required hoops I was told that my new "FLAG SHIP" receiver would have to go in for service. When I got the 55 pound beast there the women there pointed to racks of Onkyo receivers with the same problem .
Summary: This unit worked well, as others have documented, for a year and a half. Last week it started to spontaneously switch function to the Cable/Sat input, regardless of what I selected. I unplugged it and let it sit for a few minutes, and it worked for a little while longer. Now it is stuck on the Cable/Sat function and none of the panel controls or remote controls function.
