Summary: Of the 10 receivers I've owned over the decades, this is the best one for controlling sound (and video in this case). But, there are some of these models that have a known deficiency with the power module that could have disastrous consequences.
Don't buy Onkyo - issues out of box & horrible support

Summary: I bought an Onkyo TX-NR3008, it worked for about 2hrs then went into Standby mode and I couldn't do anything with it. Screen went blank, no audio, no video, no response at all except a Standby light on top left.
Summary: Just wanted to add my info as well to the failures reported by others. Receiver is great when it works but after 9 months, my unit also freezes, gets stuck in cbl/sat mode and becomes unresponsive. This is after ensuring that I have adequate cooling (added an USB fan as well).
Summary: I bought this AVR in Sep 2011, did not use it till Dec. I started using it around the end of the year. It was a great experience. I was so happy that I bought it, upgrade firmware, Audyssey setup was a charm, iPad app was useful, DNLA made sharing so easy.
No SOUND and No speaker indicators - 12 days after warranty expires!

Summary: Absolute piece of junk. Do not buy Onkyo as they put the absolute worst quality components in their receivers. I have a 12 year old Denon without all the moden inputs and features but it still works like a charm. The Onkyo has all the bells and whistles but doesn't work.
Summary: I live in Canada and I purchased this item end of May 2011 from Amazon.com because it was not available in Canada. I shipped it to my brother in the U.S and picked it up on my way home from Florida.
Summary: The TX-NR3008 and other "high-end" receivers from Onkyo have issues. See the FAQ on Onkyos web site. I am out of the Amazon return period and am having to return to a service center for who knows have long. I called OneCall about the issue and they knew nothing about it.
