Summary: This is the first receiver I've owned, and I like it. I got it because of good reviews of the SR4002, the new face design, price ($450 in Dec 2008), and some forum comment somewhere about how it sounds great with Klipsch speakers, which I like. I haven't used an SR4002 but I didn't spot any differences in the specs. I have the SR4003 driving Klipsch KG 2.5 mains, Quintet II center and surrounds, and an Orb Super 8 sub.
Summary: Looking for a secondary HDMI receiver that has both good value and sound can be hard. I tested comparable Denon, Harman Kardon, Onkyo and Yamaha receivers and settled with the Marantz. I found the Marantz to be warmer sounding and superior in music modes. The other companies did offer more bells and whistles but lacked the quality design of the amplifier stages. I would recommend this to a buyer that prefers sound quality over the newest and best processing.
