Summary: Bought this model on closeout, the new 1604 adds 4k upscaling and another HDMI, which weren't worth the price increase to me. The amp sounds great, dont let the "50W" power output fool you, it is plenty for my home theater system. Other manufacturers are clever with their power ratings, so numbers are commonly misleading. I have read alot of reviews regarding HDMI issues, specifically handshake issues. I was very nervous of that when I got this.
Summary: Great receiver, but it could have more power. This receiver doe's everything I want it to do. I like the small profile, doesn't take up a lot of space. Only 50 watts per channel, could be 70 or 80 watts, but seems to have enough for my needs! This is the older model of this unit, didn't care about the 4k pass through.
Summary: I had a Harmon Kardon receiver for several years and loved it, then upgraded to the AVR1610. I had issues with the HDMI switching and couldn't figure it out (I'm pretty tech savvy), so contacted the support desk. Unfortunately the help desk had been outsourced to another country and I wasn't able to get the answers I needed, so I returned the receiver. I then opted for the 1603. It was last year's model so got a pretty good deal on it.
Summary: The Marantz NR1603 was very easy to set up and has great sound. but...My purchase of the NR1603 on Dec. 18, 2013 is being returned today (Dec 30, 2013). I am unable to play blu rays or even standard dvds ... Like another review that I had read, I also experience video cut-out (every 10 - 30 seconds). The audio remains fine during video cut-out periods. I have swapped in two other dvd/blu ray players and have tried 3 different hdmi cables (all 6 ft. length).
For single room installations this is hard to beat

Summary: Pros: Love the low profile - after years of giant A/V boxes this is a refreshing change that looks great and more importantly frees up some much needed room in my cabinet. It's also not quite as deep as my old Onkyo. It sounds great. Don't let the "low" wattage fool you, this thing can still pump out some serious volume, quality over quantity. It's flexible - 6 HDMI ports, including a very handy one on the front - wish more A/V receivers would do this.
Summary: This is a great receiver perfect fit for my entertainment center had limited space (less than 6”) and with this being just over 4” it was just what I needed. Have had it a little over a month now and no issues works great perfect sound in my small living room probably too much for the small room it’s in.
