  • Summary: This receiver started out impressively - awesome DTS and good dolby digital, it's performance in stereo was excellent in the "direct" mode but rather artificial and wanting in the normal mode. It performed well for the first three years THEN the unit was having volume control issues then just "went out" all of a sudden and took the right front speaker with it [thanx jvc] of course NOW the protection unit kicks in - and the unit will not fire up even with no speakers or...

  • Summary: You know, it has been 4 years since anyone has posted a review for this thing on this site. Shoot, JVC doesn't even make receivers anymore. But, I just have to comment on how competent this thing is. I mean, I bought it just after its release for $350, and here I am 9 years later, still using it. At purchase I had a 5 disc JVC CD changer hooked to it with RCA's.

Great general purpose a/v amplifier

J. Perry "Daddy's Child", Amazon

  • Summary: I have had this unit up and running for more than two years. Right out of the box I ran analog and digital signals driving both studio monitors and consumer audio speakers. It's been easy to use and works like a horse. I am yet to exhaust all of the types of interfaces available. My only regret is that I set it up in a tight home audio production studio space. This has limited my use of it for connectivity to video equipment to mostly games.

Poor JVC Support

Marc E. Brown, Amazon
5 September 2004
  • Summary: This receiver unexpectedly turned off during the warranty period. It was more of a distraction than a problem, so I decided not to bother JVC with a repair request. After the warranty expired, however, the receiver would not stay on. So I wrote to JVC, explained that the problem surfaced during the warranty period, and asked if JVC would therefore be kind enough to repair it within the warranty.

  • Summary: This is a followup to my January 2001 posting. First of all, thank god I'm not crazy. Nowhere in these postings does it mention a very definite glitch in the digital processing hardware where the center channel just drops completely out of the mix. While watching DVDs in either DD or DTS, the 5.1 surround suddenly and inexplicably switches to a 4 channel surround. To correct the problem, you have to pause the DVD and resume play.

  • Summary: This little guy is awesome. I got it to augment my mini theatre and it has done that with relish. This was an open box item so I had to set it up with no manual. Not a problem. Got all my dital devices hooked up along with the satellite receiver and vcrs and I love this machine!!!! I have a sony STR-DE835 which this puts to considerable shame just on the sheer amount of inputs.

Tons of inputs and great performance

D. Grant, Amazon
5 August 2002
  • Summary: There are a couple of key features that really make this unit stand out: 1) It has more inputs than you can shake a stick at, and once you have the thing configured properly, everything works just like you'd expect. Most notably, it does audio *and* video source switching. All your video devices send their signals to the amplifier, and a single video out cable is run to the monitor.
