Summary: Purchased this to upgrade an 85 WATT Onkyo and after all the rave reviews I was pretty jacked up to try it out. I had noticed a number of people complaining about quality control issues and the left and/or right channels dying or having static issues. Sadly the latter all turned out to be true. Initially the receiver powered up and frankly I was a bit disappointed with the sound quality - I really thought my old Onkyo sounded way better with considerably less power.
Summary: My HK 3490 is only several years old, but the right channel has developed an extremely annoying crackle and static. I've read online about a similar complaint through the left channel, and that HK support is essentially worthless for dealing with this prodlem I'll have to buy a replacement receiver to solve the problem, and it sure won't be another HK.
Outdated stereo receiver, No configurable crossover for main speakers
Madhav Buddhi, Amazon
25 August 2011
Summary: There are better new models on the market now, with HDMI inputs(like Harman Kardon AVR 1650). I thought It works fine for stereo music, but I was wrong. Even for stereo music, it is better to go with new models for the following reason: HK3490 does not have built-in crossover for main speakers. So, it still sends low frequency signals(bass) to the main speakers. This causes distortion, as main speakers does not handle them well.
Summary: I recieved my Amp with the usual efficiency that Amazon provides, and that's what the star is for. I set my Amp up, attached the speakers, turned it on (as per instructions in the book) and the only output that emits crackling sound is the Phono setting. Nothing else seems to work. I live in the caribbean, so returning this Amp for replacement/repairs is not an option for me. I now have to send this NEW amp to a local service centre for diagnostics.
Summary: Brought through J&R music. Left channel died after one week of use. J&R was wonderful to work with they honored the 30 day refund 5 stars to J&R.. Issue with the receiver left channel lost after one week. Poor IR remote distance was really bad less then 8 feet with direct line of sight using the Harmon remote. Tried external IR sensor but no better luck. I really wanted a FR to IR control so I could use a roaming remote but the IR sensor was just to weak.
Summary: Purchased hk3490 from JR and discovered a firmware bug after later adding the ipod doc. This was confirmed by a FAQ on the manufacturer website. They required an RMA of the unit at my expense to get it fixed. [...] The HK is a good device. [...
Pros: Clear Sound, Easy To Setup, Intuitive Controls
Summary: Purchased hk3490 from and discovered a firmware bug after later adding the ipod doc. This was confirmed by a FAQ on the manufacturer website. They required an RMA of the unit at my expense to get it fixed. Shipping charges totaled $78. Also, their FAQ has a dead link to request support. The real support form elsewhere on their site doesn't render correctly in firefox.
Summary: I ordered this receiver to replace my old Pioneer SX-828. I figured that harman/kardon was great brand name, and was hopefully something I could trust sound wise. I do consider myself picky when it comes to sound quality, and that means the world to me from a receiver. Hooking up the HK 3490 is easy and pretty simple, as most receivers are.
Summary: HK CUSTOMER SUPPORT SAID MC CARTRIDGE WOULD WORK...NO LUCK ONLY MM. [...] HK SAID THEY WERE SORRY,WOULD NOT PAY MY RETURN SHIPPING THOUGH. NO TUNER STRENTH SIGNAL WITH THIS AMP...JUST SHOWS THE STATION. THREE TURNS OF THE VOLUME TO GET THE LOUDNESS UP AND THE SAME BACK. MISS MY YAMAHA AND GOING BACK. POOR FEATURES.
Summary: My first Harman Kardon was purchased in the early seventies. I ordered this recevier expecting the same high quality merchandise and was sadly disappointed. I tried two of the same item and they were both defective. More trouble than they were worth. No more Harman Kardon for me. Made in China. If I could have chosen "no stars" I would have.
