Summary: I purchased the HK 3490 mainly for the onboard DAC as the sound from mp3, FLAC and WAV files from my computer were always less than desirable running through my aging Sony amplifier designed for analogue applications. The HK 3490 is simple and powerful with only 2 channels, none of this 7.2 or 5.1 garbage with a huge mess of wires everywhere. My music now sounds clear and bright, no muddy bass or random volume modulations.
Summary: I purchased a factory refurbished HK 3490 for my vacation house at the beach. When it arrived in May 2013, I attached speakers and tried to use it. The unit immediately displayed the message "Voltage Protect, Check DSP" and stopped operating. This happened several times. I call HK service and the technician suggested that I had a short in a speaker wire and explained how to test. I performed the test, replaced a speaker wire and the unit performed for two days.
Summary: I've tried three other amplifiers before buying this HK 3490 and have sent them all back due to lack of punch, power and quality of sound. I've got the HK 3490's hooked up with Polk Audio RTIA7's and the sound is FREAKING AMAZING! You won't be disappointed with this HK and as longs as you pair it with higher end Klipsch or Polk speakers you won't be needing a subwoofer!..........It's just amazingly AWESOME!
Summary: This is the lowest price the HK 3490 has ever gone on sale at $44 and since I had purchased this item for $599.95 at BestBuy now the have to match the price and also beat the difference by another 10%. I had purchased the HK 3390 on sale for $300 and and now I have a chance to upgrade to the big brother at $415 taxes in! [...
Summary: I bought this receiver to drive a pair of Totem Sttaf speakers with an 88db sensitivity. I had been driving them with a 15wpc SET tube amp and thought this 120wpc receiver might give me a better sound. The receiver wasn't an improvement over the 15wpc SET amp at all and I've put it into a different setup replacing a 30 year old Radio Shack Realistic receiver. But to be honest, I don't hear any improvement over the Realistic receiver with this new HK receiver.
Summary: Bought this amplifier a year ago and the quality is pretty average, basically you get what you pay for. The amp is big and quite high and won't fit everywhere. I bought it first because of the digital inputs it has, but as the amp quality is average you don't get much benefit with a digital feed. It stopped working recently displaying 'Voltage protect check input' and tried to contact HK but no answer so far...
Summary: So far this HK is super, power and quality just amazing and price was good. Connected good subwoofer (WHARFEDALE DIAMOND SW150 SUBWOOFER) and speakers (Monitor audio bronze Bx2) and sound is just brilliant.
