Summary: I bought this receiver for a few reasons. I wanted to set up a 2 channel stereo system to primarily listen to music. I grew up with albums and miss the warm full sound they provide and this receiver has a built in phono preamp. I had owned an older Harman Kardon that my wife decided to hook up a powered subwoofer to without asking me and without knowing what she was doing. Long and short of it, she wired it improperly, and fried the damn thing. Really.
Summary: One of the last great 2 channel receivers that has a price tag within reach of the average person. Power is superb, have reached approx. 90% volume level with no discernable distortion, have not dared to go any louder, it is somewhat frightning even at that level!
Pros: Accurate Controls, Clean Sound, Easy Setup, Good Power Output, Good Remote Control, Great Sound Quality
Summary: I use this receiver to power a pair of Ascend CMT-340's in a small apartment. The HK offers PLENTY of power -- it makes the Ascends really shine, even when reproducing explosions in movies (Band of Brothers). I use the digital inputs for PS3 and computer hookups, and they work exceptionally well -- I have only ever gotten the receiver to accept PCM (no success with AAC or a Dolby signal over digital; supported formats not listed in the manual) but the sound quality is...
Pros: Beautiful Design, Clear Sound, Easy To Setup
Excerpt: Vanns had the best price on this unit and shipped it immediately so Im not sure what more I could ask for from them. As far as the product itself Im very pleased. Im using it to power my Athena AS-F2.2 floor standing speakers and it sounds fantastic. Coming from my old JBL DCR600 this HK 3490 sounds cleaner with significantly tighter bass.
Summary: The sound is loud and bright, you can feel the rythm and feel that it is moving the speakers. It is good for music. It can play CD music via digital inputs; however it cannot process the digital output from a DVD or Cable/Sat/FIOS box. This defeats the purpose. In short, you will not be able to listen to any TV program audio from your box nor any music from DVD video clips.
Pros: Clear Sound, Easy To Setup, Intuitive Controls, Thundering Bass
Great Sounding & Simple Stereo Receiver w/Digital Inputs

Summary: I purchased this receiver with a pair of Polk Audio Monitor 50 speakers and all I could say is, wow. The sound is crisp, I hear a good range of sounds and I didn't pay much for the package, less than $550. The setup is easy, the receiver is well made, except for a small imperfection on the screen. Seems that the screen filter doesn't cover the LCD completely so if you look at it from the left side you can see a different color on the screen.
Summary: I purchased the receiver from J&R a little over a year ago. It worked great and all of a sudden the right channel stopped working and the receiver gave an error message. I called HK and they gave me an RA. The replacement sent has a faulty display. I wrote them and have not heard any response as of yet. It does have a feature that turns of the lighting. I am using it because visually it is annoying. Still sounds great but I am disappointed with HK.
Summary: I got the HK3490 to replace my aging (c.a. 80s) Pioneer setup. Also got a pair of Definitive BP6 bipolar speakers to go with it. The amplifier is a wonderful stereo amplifier. I haven't owned better, but I do know that there's much better receivers out in the market. It's the value for money that makes the HK 3490 a great buy. It goes well with the speakers, sounds great for most kinds of music and movies.
