Summary: When I turned this on for the first time it would cut out every 10 seconds or so. Apparently I needed to do the firmware update. Why they don't do that when it's on their bench at the factory is pretty aggravating. It gets worse from there. The cheapest cable to connect to your computer is $40. So once I download the software I find it's not Mac compatible…So I call a friend over with a laptop running Windows (7). We get partway through the update when it freezes.
Summary: Now after 2 years of service I am EVEN MORE DISAPPOINTED than I was two years ago when I wrote the below review. This Harman Karken receiver is an absolute $800 piece of crap! DO NOT BUY! I know I never will again! I am so frustrated with this reciever that I actually felt compelled to come back and add an addendum to my review. Bottom line is that it's connections are okay and the sound is good, but IT IS BUGGY AS HECK.
Summary: I admit I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to this receiver. I can hook all sorts of electronics, but this one went way over my head. It detects my dish network sat box as a DVD, and I cannot get it to change its mind. It would not accept my Sony speaker bar through HDMI, I had to use a digital cable (not included). I admit the sound quality is hugely better than anything I have ever experienced, but how much is the receiver and how much is the new speakers?

Summary: I'm using this with Klipsch Quintet SL series speakers and a KSW-12 sub. The sound is good, but the receiver lacks options. On my other Sony ES receiver, I can modify every aspect of each speaker, along with being able to choose from every single available surround modes for each of my sources (DVD, BD, PS3, etc). On this receiver, the receiver either a) chooses the surround mode for you or b) you can choose between 3 others, one for music, movie and game.
Good HDMI upscaling/switcher system, mediocre sound quality, poor HK customer service

Summary: Update 6/7/2013: I finally had the unit replaced and didn't have any problems thereafter, except for the poor loud speaker performance. But that might be a speaker system issue and not a unit issue. The HDMI switching is really nice however, even though the audio quality is not quite there. (I went with the HK's 5.1 speaker system that accompanies the product). My score was updated from 1 star to 3 stars.
