Using a Banana Plug Will Damage your Speaker AND Receiver
28 January 2014
Summary: After connecting a banana plug to every channel without issue, I plug the final banana plug into the front-right channel port and hear a loud pop sound. The front-right channel port is placed very closely below the RCA port. When I plugged the banana plug all the way in, it made contact with the RCA port, causing the receiver to force-shutdown. Upon restarting the receiver, I noticed the front-right speaker was very quiet and muffed.
Summary: Could not give 0 star so it gets 1 (a unit fully worthy of negative marking). Update (3rd unit, 02/11/2014) So the media player (music from PC) part of third unit survived less than a month (same as the second unit). The output of media player is down to almost 0. I did not even use this unit much since I was always worried about it choking. I hope the shop (from where I bought it) returns my money and then I can buy something which works.
A receiver that runs hot and horrible customer service (UPDATE)
16 January 2014
Summary: ***Update I received the replacement about 2 weeks after writing this review and while the new unit runs hotter than I'd like, it has yet to shut down on me. Although I haven't cranked it up as loud as I used to keep the Yamaha, it's been set well past -16 DB without shutting down.
Summary: My first thoughts after I ordered this unit was this is going to be a bear to set up. I was wrong. It was almost automatic after installing speakers wiring them to this receiver. Even though I am not well versed in sound technology. I bought this unit to see if the new technology would help me hear sharper sounds and be able to adjust bass and treble to more suit my needs as I have to wear hearing aids.
Summary: In general the Denon receivers are a great buy for price/support/features. Recently I bricked 2 e400's by simply doing a firmware upgrade. I performed the firmware upgrade for 2 reasons. First the internal Pandora software constantly paused and queued. Secondly I was advised by Denon support that the upgrade would resolve the issue. I have installed many of these receivers without issue.
Summary: Bought this 2 months ago. During the period, video output to TV did not work twice: no video output to TV at all other than noises. To resolve this, the first time was to reset the received to factory default and second time was to unplug/replug the power cord back. Seems that the receiver works a while that memory or something got fill up and quit sending output video signal to TV.
Summary: This is the 4th surround receiver I have owned, the last was a high end Yamaha that wasn't up to today's technology, this was a pleasure to install, sounds great, easy to use, I highly recommend this product, using with Bose Speaker System
