Wouldn't buy it again.

25 January 2014
  • Summary: Power supply failed within first month of ownership. Not as good as my old Denon receiver. Sold it on Ebay a long time ago. Disappointing at best. Never sounded quite right.

Good quality, horrible setup & menu system

  • Summary: I'll keep it short: i have this receiver - sound quality is very good, but it is horrible to set up. God forbid one of my kids slides one of the switches on the remote - half hour to figure out what happened to get sound back...

Best Receiver In This Price Range..........

  • Summary: I've had my AVR-688 for a couple of years now, and the sound has always been incredible. There are more than enough connectors, and configurations to satisfy even some audiophiles. I would have to question any bad reviews as more likely components connected to the receiver, than the unit itself. In my case, my computer, satellite, and game console are all connected, and I couldn't be happier with the performance.

Good sounding and simple to use receiver, May need serving after a 2 years.

  • Summary: This is a very simple receiver to setup and get working. They preform well for the cost. These units have a problem with getting voltage to the video board. After the unit gets around 2 years old, it may have one of several problems staying on the same input. (After about several minutes of watching something rather on DVD or CBL/SAT it will switch to a different input). Will not go to another input.

  • Summary: One must be an electrical engineer to set this junk up. Once it was finally set-up. I experienced feedback on all audio channels. This thing has never worked. HDMI without audio pass thru???? What? Stay away from this piece of Canadian trash!

  • Summary: After the huge pain in the ass setting this up, and then finding that it wasn't capable of audio via HDMI, the digital input board has smoked. Basically, that means it's now worthless to me. After contacting Denon and being told that it didn't matter if I registered my warranty online and that they had record of my purchase date, if I didn't have the receipt, I didn't have a warranty.

Great value for the Buck

  • Summary: I have been using an AVR*-688 for over a year now... this is my experience: Pros: 1-Great sound quality. Using the auto-calibration systems works great. I have a 5.1 set up of Pioneers with a 12" Infinity Sub, and I can say the sound is envolving regardless where I`m streaming it from. 2-Conecctivity is awsome. 4 digital (assignable) audio inputs and an extensive amount of video imputs (3xhdmi,5xcomponent, 5x s-vid).

Great Boat Anchor!

  • Summary: Purchased from Circuit City right before they closed all their stores. BIG MISTAKE. This thing did not work properly from day one. The manual is so poorly written, it was quite some time before I realized that the digital side of this unit was defective. The remote control on this unit is unbelievably HORRIBLE. I purchase a lot of electronics and this will go down in my book as the biggest mistake ever.

Waste of money

Ivan V. Afanasyev, Amazon

  • Summary: Very difficult to set up. The manual is extremely poorly written. Sound quality is mediocre. I have two other receivers in other rooms and I was shocked how badly this one sounded considering the price tag. After using it for a while I bought an HD projector. HDMI ports did not work when I tried to connect the projector to this receiver. After several months of use it also started to buzz after being on for several minutes. Turning on and off helped for a while.
