Summary: This might be the 'old' series, but the general components quality (amps, 11.2, etc) and features (Full Audissey XT32) cannot be found on the new cheaper models. Only way to get this top quality and features is to jump to the new 4520, but ouch, that's out of my budget.
Summary: Updated- This is an amazing receiver for sure. (I previously thought I had an issue with the unit but found it was a bad ethernet cable) BACK TO 5 STARS FOR DENON!!!! Bought mine is Sep 2012 (Brand New) just before the new Model 4520 came out. The features are REALLY great with this unit. It Streams music right from my iPad/iPhone (music can only be fair quality when streaming) or run it to my computer and play FLAC (Which is the Highest and most amazing quality) music.
Summary: I very recently purchased this AVR & my previous receiver (Yamaha RX-V2095) was considerably less complicated than this creature . . . so, I'm still familiarizing myself with all it's features. That being said, there are a couple things I can comment on at this time are: PROS: 1) setup was fairly straight forward (if you're comfortable around electronics) because I'm not a GEEK or Audiophile . . .
Summary: I've been using this for about 3 months now in an 11.2 system. I use a NAD 5 channel amp for the LCR and surrounds simply because you need an external amp for the last 2 or in 11.2 setup and I have a 5 channel external amp. For the price, this can't be beat. You get... - 11.2 with external amp. 9.2 using internal amps only. No other receiver can beat this. - Audyssey XT32 with dual sub calibration. No other receiver can beat this. - Audyssey DSX for 11.2.
Excerpt: This receiver has it all and then some. I won't even use a third of the capabilities. I replaced a Denon AVR-5700 which is 14 years old and still in fine condition. It just doesn't have HDMI. I worried that I wouldn't get as good sound in a newer unit, but I am very pleased. Removing all the gear to supplant HDMI switching on the old box made things much simpler. I am bi-amping my front speakers this time and I can really tell a difference mid-range and up.
Summary: Needed to upgrade my whole house system to HDMI components, this was the upgraded AVR to my 8 year old Denon AVR. Excellent price compared to what I paid 8 years ago, smaller foot print and easily switched out. I didn't compare other manufacturers as I've had Denon in my house systems since 1990. Well made product, excellent performance and compatible with all my components.
Summary: Firstly I would like to say, this receiver is amazing. I really have nothing bad to say about it. Denon really have packed all the goodies into this one with 9 powerfull and fully asignable channels, HDMI, 4 zones, Auto room setup with dual subwoofer outputs and even two remotes for multi room automation. Playing my favorite movies was hauntingly realistic and makes me want to watch them all all over again! (I have over 500 DVDs) In short Denon has a cracker receiver.
