Turbo: Super Stunt Squad game review

Boys' Life magazine
27 July 2013
  • Excerpt: “Turbo” is one of the big movies this summer. Think “Cars” meets wacky terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusks: er, snails. It’s a spin on the classic “slow and steady wins the race,” except Turbo wants to be anything but slow. Turbo: Super Stunt Squad is the videogame very loosely based on the movie. There are actually two versions of the game. In the PS3 and Xbox 360 games, there’s no racing; instead, it’s more like a Tony Hawk skateboarding game – with snails.
  • Pros: [XBox 360] Tony Hawk-like tricks, very challenging, creative powerups, [3DS] Mario Kart-like game, cool track design, cute characters
  • Cons: [XBox 360] No online play, too challenging for younger kids, mediocre graphics, [3DS] No online play, uninspired music, mediocre graphics

  • Excerpt: Many companies will not even try to compete with and against Nintendo on their own hand held video game system. Most companies take one look and Mario Kart 7, and say: "no way we can compete with that."D3Publisher is not most companies though. They have taken the Turbo Super Stunt Squad license and created a neat little racer on the Nintendo 3DS.

  • Conclusion: Turbo: Super Stunt Squad is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Comic Mischief. If you get hit or fall off the track or wipe out, you just disappear and respawn again. If you’re OK with your kids watching the movie, they’ll definitely be OK with the game, too. Reading skill isn’t necessary, but younger players may get frustrated at the difficulty and lack of good instructions on how to play.

  • Conclusion: Were you expecting anything less from a movie-game cash-in? Turbo: Super Stunt Squad is a whole bag of meh, with racing action that is below-par in every way

Nintendo Life

  • Summary: When licensed titles are developed with more love and care — see the potential of Disney Infinity and some others from studios such as WayForward — it's difficult to play a rushed and dull product like this one. It's destined for the bargain bin once the movie is out of theaters, and there are simply too many good racing titles out there to warrant a purchase. Players are advised to steer clear and spend their time and money elsewhere.

Turbo Super Stunt Squad

18 November 2013
